What we help with

If it plugs in and nobody can figure it out, we can help.

Ask anything you like. We'll explain what we're doing while we do it.

Wi-Fi that reaches the whole house

Dead spots, a router in the wrong place, a network nobody can get onto. We fix the coverage first, before anybody tells you to buy faster internet.

Computers that have gotten slow or strange

The machine that takes four minutes to start, the file that vanished, the update that won't finish. We sort those out and set up a backup while we're there.

TVs, streaming and “where did my channel go”

Streaming is confusing and there are too many apps. We'll get it working and leave you with something you can run without a manual.

Phones and tablets, set up your way

Setting up a new one, moving everything across, photos, passwords, and making the text bigger without breaking anything.

Learning it at your own pace

Some visits are all teaching, and that suits us fine. We go through it with you until it makes sense and you can do it on your own.

Doorbells, cameras and smart home gear

Cameras you can pull up when you need them, a doorbell that rings the right phone, a thermostat that keeps its schedule. We set it up and explain it once.

Printers that won't print

Wireless printers are badly designed, and it isn't your fault. We'll get it printing and scanning and leave it that way.

Scams, pop-ups and “is this email real?”

Pop-ups, fake warnings, emails that want you to click. We'll clear it out and show you what to look for so the next one doesn't get you.

Local to Tyler

What tech help looks like around here.

Tyler is the Rose City, with older brick houses in the Azalea District that are lovely and hard on Wi-Fi, and newer houses south toward Flint and Bullard that are big enough one router won't reach the back. Around Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine it's lake houses in the pines, and the first question is which internet service reaches the house at all.

We love making it easy

Patient, unhurried help, especially for the 55+ crowd.

A lot of people retire to East Texas for the lakes and the pines, and plenty of Tyler households have been in the same house for thirty or forty years. We sit down, go at your pace, and write things down if you want them written down.

Questions

What people in Tyler ask us.

Does somebody come out to Tyler?

The ZIP check when you book answers that for your street: if a Local Nerd comes out to your address, the visit books at the rate shown. The list on this page marks every town a Local Nerd reaches today.

I'm in Athens or Palestine. Is that too far?

No. Our service area is measured in miles from downtown Tyler: Whitehouse, Lindale and Bullard are inside the closest band, Jacksonville, Athens, Canton and Palestine are in the 25 to 50 mile band, and Sulphur Springs is in the outer one. This page lists every town by band.

I'm in Longview or Kilgore. Is that this page?

No. Longview, Kilgore, Marshall and Henderson have their own page, measured from downtown Longview. Enter your ZIP when you book and it lands on the right one.

How much does tech help cost in Tyler?

Remote help is $39 for a 30-minute session, and that's what works in Tyler today. When in-person visits open here, they'll be $110 an hour within 25 miles of downtown Tyler, $130 in the 25 to 50 mile band and $145 from 50 to 75 miles, and the higher rate is how we pay for the drive. A $39 deposit will book an in-person visit, with the rest charged after your Local Nerd finishes and you sign off on the work. Nerd on Call membership is $14.99 a month and includes two remote sessions and an in-person visit a year, plus 20% off anything extra. You always agree to the rate before we start.

Do you help older adults in Tyler with technology?

Yes. One-on-one help for older adults is work we like. We go at your pace, and we'll write the steps down for you to keep.

Do you fix broken devices, or just set things up?

We do. Most of what people call broken is a setting, an update, an account or a connection, and we fix those. Screens, batteries, parts and data recovery from a failed drive are somebody else's job, and we'll tell you that up front.
